Apple declared the development of iPhone firmware update 4.0, forthcoming version of the mobile operating system for iPhone 3G S, iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad. Features of iPhone firmware 4.0 include multi-tasking support, iBook, folders for the apps, game center, better digital zoom and around 100 new improvements. They haven’t announced anything about the new iPhone 4G model that would also get iPhone firmware update 4.0. The new firmware comes with support for around 1500 APIs, which developers can use to program applications. The final version of iPhone firmware updates 4 will be available by the end of this June. Developers can now download firmware 4 at the official Apple developer website.

Apple iPhone firmware update 4.0 comes with inbuilt support for multi-tasking. Unlike other smartphones that consume much memory and system resources on multitasking, the new iPhone firmware 4.0 allows only the must need application services to deal with memory resources. That means sometimes it may not be the full application that is multi-tasking, but one of its background services. The iPhone firmware 4.0 update has seven APIs (application programming interface) that assists developers to create application services that can multi-task. These include, audio, VoIP notification, location, fast switching and task finishing APIs. The online steaming apps like Pandora, VOIP apps like Skype, navigation app like Google Maps, all can work in the background while the user is completing other tasks. Notification API can be used to deliver alerts from local applications and server side services all at the same time. Task finishing API in iPhone firmware update 4.0 helps the apps to continue the background processes without keeping itself open as a whole.
Apple iAd service: iPhone firmware update 4.0 includes options to develop and deploy ads on iPhone apps. This would help developers to generate around 60% revenue from iPhone apps they develop. Advertisements in iAd platform will be managed and hosted by Apple.
iPhone Game center: The new firmware update brings all in one game center in iPhone and iPod touch. Developers can make use of the related API to create social gaming networks, where users can add friends and play multi-player games.
Other than this, the iPhone update 4.0 APIs allows developers to access calendar, video camera, map, photo library data in their applications.
The iPhone firmware 4.0 will put forward some notable changes to total user experience of iPhone 3G S and iPod touch 3G. There is an option to create folders, and include desired apps from the home screen into them. This new feature will allow users to install and mange around 2000 apps in their devices.

Apple iPhone firmware update 4.0 is now available here, only for developers. Many websites have started posting leaked download links of firmware 4.0 for iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3G S. However, you will need to have Apple Dev ID to proceed with installation and testing of the iPhone OS 4.0 in these devices. The firmware update is not fully compatible with iPhone 3G, iPod 2G and iPod touch 3G ( 8Gb and 16GB). So users with those devices would need to jailbreak iPhone firmware 4.0 to get multi-tasking or unlock to use with another operator.

One of the member of iPhone Dev team posted a video showing that its possible to jailbreak iPhone firmware 4.0. However, they won’t release any jailbreak or unlock tool before the final release of OS 4.0.
